The National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, in agreement with the Chief of the Police in Suðurnes, has declared the public protection level at risk of a hotwater shortage on the Reykjanes peninsula. This is stated in an announcement from the Directorate.

Public protection officials also ask residents in Suðurnes to wait as long as possible to use electric heating. Residents and the professional community are also asked to lower their house-based heating systems and not use hot water to bathe in showers, bathtubs or hot tubs

In response to such events, a new hot-water pipe is being constructed in the ground in this area. A section of about 500 meters long has been constructed, where the plan is to connect in case the old plumbing hub is destroyed, but it may take some days to get the new pipes operational.” https://perma.cc/FA46-D9TE

The speed of the lava flow has been quite surprising, with flows ranging from 800 to 1,000 metres per hour https://perma.cc/AP3E-YZB3

It seems very fast, but this speed is due to the fact that the lava has been spreading little, but rather goes in one direction.

Tómasdóttir says the weather is getting colder today, and frost is expected to be between 3-10 degrees. However, it will become overcast tomorrow, and then the frost will decrease. Therefore, tomorrow afternoon, frost is expected to be around 0-5 degrees on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Then, the temperature is expected to remain similar until Saturday, but then it will start to warm up slightly on Sunday, or after the weekend, Tómasdóttir says, adding that then the temperature will be around or above the freezing point https://perma.cc/9TR6-R6EZ

“To date, such a situation has limited impact on the operation of Keflavik Airport but we are following developments closely and are well-prepared if measures are needed https://perma.cc/9SY4-9VTM
